Steep rise in Diwali pollution in commercial areas this year

While on Diwali, the commercial areas recorded a seven-point rise in pollution, whereas six-point rise in pollution from pre to post Diwali was recorded in residential areas. In sensitive areas, there was a five-point rise in pollution level compared to pre-Diwali noise pollution level. The noise pollution level in residential, commercial and sensitive areas before Diwali was 57 Leq db (A), 63 Leq db (A) and 49 Leq db (A) m, respectively. However, those recoded in corresponding areas during Diwali were recorded at 63 Leq db (A), 70 Leq db (A) and 54 Leq db (A), respectively. While the average level of pre-Diwali pollution in the district (recorded on October 12, 2017) were 56 Leq db (A), the noise pollution recorded on Diwali was 62.3 Leq db (A).

Aparna Banerji Jalandhar, October 25 While a marginal reduction was registered in the ambient air pollution level in the district this Diwali, compared to last year, there has been a marginal rise in the level of noise pollution registered before and on Diwali this year. However, the noise level registered during the burning of the Ravana effigy in the district were higher than those registered during the peak hours of Diwali. While the average level of pre-Diwali pollution in the district (recorded on October 12, 2017) were 56 Leq db (A), the noise pollution recorded on Diwali was 62.3 Leq db (A). While on Diwali, the commercial areas recorded a seven-point rise in pollution, whereas six-point rise in pollution from pre to post Diwali was recorded in residential areas. However, the noise pollution on Dasehra during the burning of Ravana effigies reached as high as 104 Leq db (A). Before the burning of the Ravana effigy, the figure was 78 Leq db (A), during burning it was 104 Leq db (A) and after the burning of the Ravana effigy, it was recorded at 69 Leq db (A). During the day time on Dasehra, the noise pollution was 65 Leq db (A).
